01 May CAN THE DIAMOND JUBILEE AND OLYMPICS BEAT THE RECESSION
The Diamond Jubilee weekend will celebrate the Queen’s reign of 60 years and Britain will host the Olympics shortly afterwards.
The Queen took the throne on 6th February 1952 and her coronation took place on 2nd June 1953. To mark her Diamond Jubilee the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh will visit England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland during 2012.
The Jubilee celebrations are to be held over the extended weekend of 2,3,4 and 5th of June 2012. The late May Bank Holiday has been moved to accommodate the holiday. An additional day, Jubilee Bank Holiday, has been added which is Tuesday 5th June.
The British Public alone are expected to spend £1.07 billion more than usual. Shoppers will fork out £685 million on celebrations for two events with £307 on souvenirs and memorabilia and £77 million on tourism.
This should increase retail sales by 2.8% which is good news for retailers who have struggled with low spending and poor consumer confidence over the past 12 months.
